Celebrity socialite, Obinna Iyiegbu, a.k.a Obi Cubana has been arrested by the officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, according to multiple reports.
Obi Cubana was arrested and taken to the headquarters of the EFCC at Jabi, Abuja, at about noon on Monday. He was interrogated by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged money laundering and tax fraud.
Though allegations against the socialite weren’t detailed as of press time, a source disclosed that “Obi Cubana was arrested and brought to the EFCC headquarters on Monday afternoon over allegations of money laundering and tax fraud. He is being grilled by detectives as we speak.”
The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said he had yet to be briefed on the development.
Reacting to Cubana’s arrest, popular socio-political activist, Deji Adeyanju, urged Cubana to calm down because things could get worse for him.
The activist said the EFCC interrogation was better than being arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.
Adeyanju wrote, “EFCC can arrest Obi Cubana but Abba Kyari is free. Tinubu the Bullion Van king is a free Wonderful one in Nigeria.
When I told Obi Cubana to be careful, some people said I was jealous of him. It’s still much better to be arrested by the EFCC than the FBI.
He should be celebrating that its EFCC. Calm down, Obi. It’s not serious for now but it could get worse.”
Obi Cubana made the headlines after he held a lavish funeral for his mother, Ezinne Iyiegbu, in Oba, Anambra State in July.
The celebration of life sparked reactions after the much display of wealth, leading him to give his grass-to-grace stories in interviews, narrating how he started in a one-room apartment as a fresh graduate undergoing the mandatory national youth service in Abuja in 1999
He told BBC Pidgin that he started as an estate agent and made his first N1 million through a house furnishing contract he got at that time.
