Stand Up For Champ Casillas!

After 22 years of great service between the sticks, Real Madrid Legend, Iker Casillas has decided to officially hang his gloves.

 

The World Cup-winning goalkeeper who hasn’t taken part in a competitive game since suffering a serious health scare in May 2019, announced his retirement on social media saying,

The most important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination that it takes you.

“I think I can say, without hesitation, that this has been the right path and the dream destination. Thanks.”

The highly decorated Spanish international is a man loved by many and duly respected by all and his announcement has attracted lots of tributes and goodwill messages from fans and clubs alike.

Real Madrid, the club where the goal keeping maestro won all major club titles including five La Ligas titles, four Supercopa de España titles, two Copa del Rey titles, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, one International Cup and a FIFA Club world Cup, joined in celebrating one of the club’s Legends with a tribute video comprising of some of his most memorable moments in the 25 years he spent with them.

Portuguese side, FC Porto with whom Casillas made 156 appearances for after leaving Real Madrid in 2015, and recorded two more title triumphs with sent their warmth through Twitter as well.

Football governing body, FIFA did not take a back seat either as they applauded the man who has contributed so much to the growth of the beautiful game.

Casillas bagged 24 individual awards during his days on the pitch is now looking to take on positions off the field, having announced his decision to  run for the Presidency of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), he will definitely have pleasant and fond memories to look back at.
