The Academy Condemns Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, says it’s launching a Formal Review

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has condemned Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars and is launching a formal review into his conduct.

Following Will Smith’s assault on Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars, the Academy said further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law will be explored.

“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law,” the statement read.

The review comes following the intense public debate about whether Smith’s actions were justified or unwarranted. Smith could be sanctioned if he is found to be at fault during the review.

The group’s conduct policy states it is “opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination” and expects members to uphold the values “of respect for human dignity, inclusion, and a supportive environment that fosters creativity.”

Violations may result in suspension or expulsion from the organization, revocation of Oscars, or loss of eligibility for future awards, according to the policy.

However, Hollywood insiders like actors and members of the Academy’s board of governors, said during the US talk show The View Whoopi Goldberg that it is unlikely Smith will lose his award.

“We’re not going to take that Oscar from him,” she predicted. “There will be consequences I’m sure, but I don’t think that’s what they’re going to do.”

Smith earned the award – his first – for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, in the film King Richard
