Ubani Urges FG To Obey Court Order, Fix Prices Of Goods

A former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section of Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), Monday Ubani, says he anticipates that the Federal Government would abide by an order from the Lagos Federal High Court for them to set the prices of goods and petroleum products within seven days.

He started this when he played guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, noting that regulation of goods by the government is the right thing to do.

He said, “The government must (fix prices of goods). The court has now ordered within seven days, a government that is interested in making sure that the lives of people is better will intervene in this particular process and obey the court judgement and say let’s now begin to fix prices on items and that is the best thing for them to do.

“And I think that a government that loves Nigeria would do that. I don’t hope that they will go and appeal over this particular judgement,” Ubani said.

The senior attorney expressed sadness that people are taking unfair advantage of customers as a result of the government’s inability to regulate the price of commodities and petroleum supplies.

“There was some level of government intervention in prices of things in Nigeria. It got to a stage where government did not in any way show interest in issue of inflation, in issue of price fixing and the law has always been there.

“So, I am now saying that people look at the government not showing any interest and increase price,” he said.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Wednesday, ordered the Federal Government to fix the price of goods and petroleum products within seven days.

The Nigerian government was directed by Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, the presiding judge, to set prices for milk, flour, sugar, salt, motor vehicles and their spare parts, motorcycles, matches, and bicycles as well as petroleum products like kerosene, diesel, and petrol motor spirit (PMS).

Recently, Nigerians in different state have expressed their grievances over the hike in the prices of goods. It is no longer news that prices of goods increase daily which leaves the ordinary citizen alarmed.
