AFCON’23: President Tinubu welcomes Eagles, confers national award on team

The Super Eagles of Nigeria received a hero welcome upon their return to the country following their second-place finish at the just concluded 2023 African Cup of Nations, which the hosts nation, Cote D’Ivoire, won after defeating the Eagles 2-1 in the final. 

The team was welcomed and received by President Bola Tinubu, who commended the team, the coach, the crew, and the entire management team for their hard work, assiduity, and sacrifice to come this far in the tournament, acknowledging the hurdles they consistently surpassed with steadily improving performance as they pulled through to the finals.

The president went on to reward the Super Eagles with a national award, the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), flats in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and a piece of land.

On his part, speaking on behalf of the team, Vice Captain, William Troost-Ekong, who won the player of the tournament award, assured the president and Nigerians that the team will work hard to surpass their achievements by winning the gold medal in the next competition.
