Obi Calls FG to Support MSMEs

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in the 2019 General elections, and Former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi, has called on the federal government to support
entrepreneurship and the private sector to achieve economic potentials.
Obi stated this on Friday during a ceremony in Nnewi.

He noted that for the country to achieve stable economic growth and development, the economy’s engine must be enhanced by formulating fiscal and monetary policies that should be implemented to help local businesses, especially Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
He added that supporting small businesses must include patronage of locally manufactured products.

“In most economies doing well around the world, governments support their local manufacturers by patronising them.

“I travelled to India severally in the 80s and 90s. All their government officials drove Tata motors manufactured in Muo, India. Today, Tata is a global automobile company with many subsidiaries”, Obi said.

Obi lamented the case of the country as businesses do not get support or sometimes little from the government. He added that: “It is unfortunate that in most government houses today, sets of furniture and household equipment are all imported from abroad.

“Some even boast that their chairs are Versace and Gucci designs. That is simply a shame and show of ignorance”, Obi stated.

Obi stressed that when small businesses get support, the nation will experience economic growth, which will result in the creation of jobs and lifting many Nigerians out of poverty.
