PDP NEC:  Protesters Back Damagun, Wike

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national office in Abuja was overrun by protesters on Wednesday, who demonstrated their support for Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Umar Damagun, the acting national chairman of the party.

With signs bearing a variety of messages, the demonstrators vowed to support Wike and Damagun and claimed that certain PDP members were attempting to sow discord among the party’s leadership.

The demonstration happened just one hour before the PDP Governors Forum meeting and twenty-four hours before the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where matters pertaining to PDP leadership are anticipated to be deliberated.

Recently, the PDP has been rocked by agitations from some of its members who demanded that the National Working Committee (NWC) resign due to their perceived inability to properly lead the party.

In a related move, the NWC guaranteed its members of the party’s continuous stability, expansion, and prosperity on Wednesday by voting in favour of Damagun.

The NWC’s decision, which was made at the conclusion of its 584th meeting at the National Secretariat of the party on Tuesday, also applauded the acting national chairman’s efforts to stabilise and reestablish the PDP as the principal opposition party in Nigeria.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party will meet on Thursday.
