AFCON: Late extra winner sends 10 Man Ivory Coast to Semi finals

AFCON Host nation Ivory Coast showed incredible resilience as they avoided elimination from the Tournament, courtesy of Oumar Diakite’s dramatic winner in the 122nd minute of the quarter finals encounter against Mali.

The hosts who had been reduced to 10 men just before halftime were trailing Mail by a goal which was scored by Nene Dorgeles in the 71st minute and it looked all set that the end had come for them in the tournament, but just at the stroke of full time, Simon Adingra produced an equalizer, sending the game into the extra time and keeping the Ivorian hope alive.

As Extra time drew to an end, it was safe to say the game would result in a penalty shootout, but the most dramatic thing, yet, happened when Diakite capitalized on Seko Fofana’s pass and turned in a very late winning, electrifying the whole stadium, much to the heartbreak of Mali.ย 

For a side that played with a numerical disadvantage for most of the game, the hosts displayed one of the most clutch and resilient displays at the competition yet and their drive is the reason they will be playing Dr. Congo on Wednesday for a place in the final…ย
