AFCON: Nigeria through to last 16, as hosts risk elimination

The Super Eagles of Nigeria held on to a narrow 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau to book a spot in the last 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The only goal of the game came in the first half when Opa Sangante turned Moses Simon’s cross into his own net.

Both nations kept at it after the break, with disallowed goals on each side, but the Eagles emerged as fortunate winners, as they finished second in Group A to secure a round of 16 place.

Meanwhile, in the other group A fixture, the host nation, Ivory Coast was handed an embarrassing 4-0 defeat by Equatorial Guinea, who finished as group leaders and are through to the last 16.

The result leaves Ivory Coast in third place with 3 points and at risk of getting knocked out of the tournament if they do not end up as one of the four best losers across the six groups.Β

The Super Eagles will be up against the second-placed team from Group C, which will be either Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon, in the last 16 games on Saturday.Β
