AFCON: South Africa clinchs third place with penalty win over DR Congo
South Africa are bronze winners at the 2023 AFCON, after securing a 6-5 penalty victory over DR Congo.
Two penalty saves from the Bafana Bafana keeper and captain, Ronwen Williams, played a huge role in handing his team the win and helping them to their best AFCON finish in 24 years.
South Africa lost the semi-finals clash against Nigeria in a shootout, while Congo lost to hosts, Cote D’Ivoire, and both sides played out a stalemate after regulation time, making South Africa the first team to play three straight Afcon shootouts, having also played shootouts against. Cape Verde in the quarter-finals.
The Leopards of DR Congo may have lost the third-place game, but they can be proud of the run they and at the tournament.
