Atletico Madrid wins first La Liga title in seven years

Atletico Madrid clinched their first title in seven years, and 11th overall, thanks toย Luis Suarez, winning goal against Real Valladolid on Saturday in what would be one of the most keenly contested campaigns yet in the Spanish La Liga.ย With Barcelona out of the race, no thanks to last weekend’s defeat, defending Champions, Real Madrid and their City rivals took the title race to wire and of course, it ended in dramatic favour.ย

ย Real Valladolid took the lead in the first half against Diego Simeone’s men who needed a win or a defeat for Real Madrid to win the league, but they turned the match around in the second half thanks to goals from Angel Correa and Luis Suarez’s.

And as dramatic endings would have it, Real Madrid who were also losing to Villarreal, turned the game around to beat Villarreal 2-1, but the victory wasn’t enough as they needed their rivals to drop points in other to win the league.ย ย

But Atletico’s doggedness means they finish two points ahead of Real, who end the season without a trophy for the first time in almost a decade.ย

Meanwhile, Barcelona who, at the start of the season let go of Saurez, and players without skipper Lionel Messi, who was resting before the summer’s Copa America, won 1-0 at Eibar through Antoine Griezmann’s strike to clinched third place and finish out of the top two for the first time in a long time.ย

It’s been a rollercoaster season and Atletico Madrid are most definitely deserving champions of the 2020/2021ย  Spanish La Liga.ย
