Davido pledges N300m to orphanages across Nigeria

Nigerian Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke professionally known as Davido publicly pledged a whopping three hundred million Naira to orphanages across Nigeria, amid the current economic crisis.

Sharing on the microblogging platform, X, the Afrobeats singer announced on February 20, 2024, his pledge to finance children living in orphanage homes across the country. He also shared the big news on his Instagram page.

He stated that it is an agreement between him and his foundation to fund the residential homes of orphans with the sum of three hundred million naira and that the pledge is a yearly gift as his contribution to the nation.

He tweeted;

“I and my foundation pledge the sum of 300 million Naira to orphanages around Nigeria … as my yearly contribution to the Nation .. details of disbursement tomorrow”

He also announced that the disbursement of the fund will be announced on February 21.

Reacting to the big news and the huge money involved, Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday immediately commented,

“I be orphan ooo” as she humorously clamored to be included in the gifting.

However, she’s not the only celebrity that has reacted to Dobido’s generosity. Zlatan Ibilie also reacted by putting some hand clap emojis.Reality TV star Tolani  Baj had also reacted by stating simply, “a king.”

Davido’s post also met with some criticisms from his usual critic, Daniel Regha.

Shortly after Davido made the tweet, Daniel Regha took to his page to call out his flaws, accusing the singer of being biased.

He asked that Davido ‘call out leaders in the country who are not living up to their role as elected representatives’ and also use his platforms as the ‘people’s voice’ to seek good leadership.

In Daniel Regha’s words,

“Helping out the needy financially is good, but that alone shouldn’t be anyone’s ‘yearly contribution to the nation.

“The likes of Davido need to engage in political discussions; he’s a Nigerian and should do it without being biased. Celebs should speak up for the masses by calling out our leaders; they should put their influence to good use.

“The last ‘250 million Naira’ Davido supposedly donated to an orphanage was not well accounted for; he’s also yet to fulfill the ’20 million Naira’ pledge he made in the form of a giveaway.”

“The same Davido has been accused of owing/seizing people’s money (like that of Amaju Pinnick), but he wants to donate ‘300 million Naira’ to orphanages around Nigeria? And y’all wonder why Nigerian politicians can get away with almost anything in this country.”
