Euro 2020: Cristiano Ronaldo equals goal scoring record as Portugal book last 16 spot

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled the men’s all-time international goalscoring record as defending champions Portugal drew with France to qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2020, where they’ll face Belgium.

Ronaldo scored his 108th and 109th goals, both from the penalty spot to equal Ali Daei’s record set with Iran between 1993 and 2006.

The goals which came in both halves of the fixture, which was a replica of the Euro 2016 final, wasn’t enough to give Portugal the win as Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema scored a brace to keep things levelled and ensure France finished at the top of an instead keenly contested group F.

Portugal looked set to finish second and England in the next round before Germany’s dramatic late equaliser in their other game of the group against Hungary pushed them from fourth to second, leaving Portugal in third and eliminating bottom-placed Hungary from the tournament.
