INEC Presents Certificate of Return to Governors, NASS Elect Members

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has started presenting certificates of return to the governors-elect in the March 18 gubernatorial poll.

The poll which took place in 28 states recorded success in 26 states while there will be a re-run in Adamawa and Kebbi state, where the electoral umpire declared inconclusive,  on Saturday, April 15.

The commission will also present certificates to lawmakers elected in the relevant state legislatures across the 36 states of the federation.

From the poll, the All Progressives Congress (APC) swept 15 states and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 9, while the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) won in one each.

Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, the Delta State Governor-elect Sheriff Oborevwori, and his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, have been presented Certificate of Return by the National Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in charge of Edo, Delta and Bayelsa, Mrs Roda Gumus.

The ceremony was held at the INEC headquarters, in Asaba, Delta State. The commission also presented certificates of return to 29 members-elect of the State House of Assembly.

Similarly, The Kano State Governor-elect, Abba Kabir Yusuf, alongside his running mate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has received their certificate return.

 On Wednesday, Yusuf invited Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, of the All Progressive Congress (APC)  and his close rival, as well as other candidates who ran but were unsuccessful in the 2023 elections, to work with his administration to advance the state and make significant strides.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Wednesday 29 March to Friday 31 March to issue Certificates of Return to governors, deputy governors-elect and states Houses of Assembly members-elect.

Last Saturday, the Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, in a statement said: “By the provisions of Section 72(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, the Commission is mandated to issue a certificate of return within 14 days to every candidate who has been returned elected under the law.

“Pursuant to the provision, the Commission has fixed Wednesday, March 29, Thursday, March 30 and Friday, March 31 for the issuance of Certificates of Return to those elected on March 18.

“The presentation will take take place in INEC offices in each state of the federation,’’ Mr Okoye stated.
