Rivers Lawmaker’s Defects to APC

Twenty-seven lawmakers out of thirty-one in the Rivers State House of Assembly who were elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, have decamped to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The lawmakers made their decision public during Monday’s plenary at the Rivers Assembly Complex and cited division and crisis in the PDP as their reasoning for leaving.

It was gathered that the lawmakers were those loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike, and were under the leadership of Martin Amaehwule.

Recall that 24 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had signed an impeachment notice against  Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The power of the state’s political system has been a point of contention for both Fubara, the governor of Rivers, and Wike, the immediate past governor. Last month, the two politicians’ falling out reached a breaking point that resulted in an attempt to remove Fubara from office.

There are rumors that the political problem is still far from being addressed, even despite President Bola Tinubu’s purported intervention to restore peace in the state.
