La Liga; Real Madrid earns three points and bragging rights over Atletico in Madrid Derby

Defending Spanish champions Real Madrid on Saturday handed a frustrating first defeat of the current table leaders Atletico Madrid to move within three points of the top.

Diego Simeone’s side had won seven consecutive league games going into the derby, conceding twice in their first 10 La Liga fixtures.

The victory means Real have not lost a Madrid derby in La Liga since 2016 as their bragging rights continue to grow against their City rivals.

Casemiro’s 15th-minute header from Toni Kroos’ corner gave the hosts a deserved lead at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

Real doubled the lead in the second half via Dani Carvajal’s resounding strike from outside the box, which rebounded off the post and got in off the back of Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Real climb to third, while Atletico remains one point above Real Sociedad.
